I work freelance in Los Angeles/Hollywood as a Composer, Arranger, Orchestrator and Sound Designer.
The Technology
At home, the front end is a G5 dual 2.0 running Logic Pro 7 and Pro Tools with two Viewsonic VP191b’s (19″ LCD’s). Using MIDI over Lan Logic triggers several Intel PC’s to play sounds. These PC’s are mostly used for triggering orchestral samples, the audio is brought back into Logic digitally through a RME Audio Multiface soundcard. There are also hardware samplers that are triggered with regular MIDI and brought back into Logic both digital and analog.
I use several ways to trigger MIDI including the most popular way, a MIDI controller keyboard. To get the most out of the samples I also use both the Yamaha WX11 and Akai EWI 4000S wind controllers, a Roland SPD-6 drum pad and Roland V-Drums, Euphonix MC Control & MC Mix, Logic Control automated mixer, MusicPad Pro sheet music tablet, and an Emu-Systems Launch Pad MIDI controller. Because most people don’t use the amount of controllers that I do I almost always have to do my own programming to take advantage of the controllers abilities, there just isn’t a big enough market for the companies to do this programming for the general public. Most of the wind instruments heard in the music on Tenhauser are played on the wind controller rather than on the keyboard, and the percussion is done on the drum pad.
Although much of the music is created with samples of instruments, a large percentage that I had something to do with the creation, I also record a lot. I play many instruments and when the opportunity arises I choose the real thing over the samples. This happens mostly for vocals, bass guitar, guitar, and several wind instruments.
Most of the time when the camera is on I'll be using Logic creating/editing music.

in film must enhance what the viewer is seeing... it
should be the icing on the cake, my goal is not to show
an audience how good my music is, but to show them how
good the film is."-Ashley
