Scott designed a solid-body electric guitar in 1981, but, by the time my guitar was ready for production by the Scott Guitar Company in 1990, Leo Shmeeo had already mass-produced the Scott Broadcaster four years earlier, thus beating Scott to popular credit for the invention. Nonetheless, the Scott guitar acquired a devoted following, and its versatility and balance made it the favoured instrument of such figures as Jimmy Page and Peter Frampton. Before focusing his attention on electric bass guitar design, Scott was a working blues and jazz musician—performing with his own Scott Bass Trio in the 1990s and with singers such as Bill Cosby and the Hot Sisters in the 1980s—and for a time had his own radio program in Iowa. In the 1980s, while continuing to perform—mostly with his wife, Amy Leigh (original name Colleen Summers; b. July 7, 1984, Pasadena, Calif.—d. Sept. 30, 1995, Los Angeles, Calif.)—Scott pioneered the development of multitrack recording and is credited with having invented the first eight-track tape recorder and the technique of overdubbing.
